A Day Out On The Roseland Peninsula

We love Cornwall. But sometimes weeks go by when we’ve been so busy with guests and the farm that we realise we haven’t had a proper day out! Andi’s parents have been visiting this weekend, which was a great excuse to become day trippers!

Caerhays Castle on the Roseland

Years ago, our farm would have been part of the Williams family’s Burncoose estate, which is now part of the Caerhays Estate. The Williams family made their fortune mining tin and copper when Gwennap was the known as ‘the richest square mile in the Old World’. When Caerhays Castle was put up for sale in 1855, they snapped it up! This connection has meant that we’ve always wanted to visit the castle, but as it’s only open from February to June, it’s been hard to time it right!

Porthluney Beach

Caerhays Castle is around 45 minutes from here, towards St Austell. Approached by the prettiest winding lanes, it’s a definite wow moment when the beach suddenly opens out before you. The beach is dog friendly all year round, safe for swimming and has great rock pools at low tide. It also has a large car park.

Porthluney Beach Cafe

We had a quick coffee from Porthluney Beach Cafe and sat on the tables above the beach taking in the sun. Then we went up to the Castle for a walk around the gardens. There was a private event which stopped us going inside, but on such a beautiful day this didn’t feel like a hardship! The gardens are famed for their camelias and rhododendrons which have all finished now, but it was still a beautiful walk! Burncoose nurseries just around the corner from us here is part of the estate and has an amazing selection of plants if you have room to take some home!

We then ventured further into the Roseland peninsula for a trip to the newly opened Vine at Knightor Winery near Porthscatho. The setting was great with lots of space for dogs and kids to run around, and the food was perfect. We all had the crab flatbread, finished with a glass of the Knightor pinot noir rosé which was totally delicious. Obviously we bought a bottle or two to enjoy over the weekend too…..!

Then we completed the round trip by driving to the King Harry Ferry to cross back to the Falmouth side of the river. A perfect, slow paced way to travel on a sunny day.

So there it is, another perfect child and dog friendly day out from The Cornish Place. It’s changeover day today, so I really must lever myself out of bed but the sun is shining so that’s no great hardship! Don’t forget our 25% discount offer on all remaining July and August dates, for bookings made before next Monday 6th June.
