2. Planting Native Trees

Let’s plant trees!

We have planted over 700 trees in this field!

By absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, trees help to combat climate change. Trees help to improve soils and prevent flooding and erosion.

See if you can identify these trees from their leaves in Spring and Summer (in Winter they all look a bit like sticks!!)

In 2020 we planted 150 trees with our 3 children along the road and drive edges of the field. These were:

  • wild cherry

  • willow

  • birch

  • rowan

  • oak

In 2023 the Woodland Trust gave us a grant to plant 575 more trees! The idea is that eventually our front field joins up with the ancient wood opposite to extend the habitat for local wildlife. We needed more help this time so held a tree planting weekend with guests in the cottages and local volunteers all helping us. We planted:

  • beech

  • downy birch

  • oak

  • sweet chestnut

  • spruce

  • crabapple

  • wild cherry

  • rowan

  • hazel (to form a hedge around the cut flower patch)
